Ever hear the expression, " I will leave a light on"? It is an expression that captures a father's heart for his children, and family. Fathers worry at times about what troubles our kids can get into. We often know too well what trouble we got into in our younger years. We can get upset when our kids don't listen and they are not home on time. These feelings transition to worried about if they are ok. Feeling of relief when they finally come home, or feelings of being up all night, sleepless when they didn't.
"Leave a light on" reflects a wide range of feelings. Children's safety, security for home, help loved ones find their way in the dark, show them we are home, waiting, caring. Always a place for family to come home to. Their safe place where they are loved.
Did God leave a light ON when he came in the flesh to save the world? Dark world, there was no hope in the world. But God left a light on. He showed he cared for us, and left a way to guide us to our heavenly home. Mothers nurture and care for those in their families. They express their love differently than men. We men don't always show our love, or speak it all the time. We express it in ways we think will meet needs, not wants. We leave a light ON. There may be times we turn the light off, frustrated when not home on time. Usually, we can't fall asleep, get up multiple times, and end up turning the light back on. There is nothing a family could do to a father that he won't leave the light on. We may want to yell at them when they get home, but mostly we want to be like the prodigal son's father, embrace and rejoice that they are home. I am sure there can be a certain amount of fear of coming home late, kids can worry like the prodigal son did at first. I am sure we don't throw a feast in their name when they come home, but inside we feel like celebrating they are home safe.
God showed us he would do everything to leave a light on. To leave hope in the world. He just asked us to believe we are loved, believe he left us away to his home. Jesus died to leave us a light ON. I believe the light left ON by God is a cross up on a hill.
Thank you, God, for leaving a Light ON for all of us.
